Born in Tajimi (Gifu Prefecture, Japan). Study of biology at Kanazawa University and physiology at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Previously appointed at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (1989-2003), University of Tennessee (1990-1993), University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (1994-1995), and Louisiana State University (1995-1996).
