Until February 2009 Dr. Buchwald-Lancaster has been research group leader and neurologist at the Max Planck Institute. Addtitionally she headed the specialized outpatient clinic for movement disorders.

The projects of the research group concentrated on the pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for the loss of function in immune mediated neurological disorders by linking clinical neurology and basic neuroscience.
