Scientific profile
Our projects focus on questions originating from the treatment and clinical course of patients with major depression, addressing the close interaction between stress hormone regulation, depression and antidepressant treatment. Currently available antidepressants are safe and effective, but only less than half of the patients attain complete remission after therapy with an antidepressant drug after 6-8 weeks. It has been hypothesized that the existing antidepressant drugs initially act on substrates that are considerably upstream of yet unknown targets that are ultimatively responsible for the antidepressant-like effects. We use hypothesis-free approaches and animal models for chronic stress to improve our knowledge of stress- and antidepressant-regulated signalling pathways. The identification of potential novel drug targets will help to more specifically treat depression and stress-associated pathologies in the future.
