Scientific profile
The main research interests of the groups are related to the pathomechanisms of hypo- and hyperpituitarisms. In vitro, ex vivo and animal studies are performed to elucidate the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury-induced pituitary insufficiency as well as the underlying mechanisms of pituitary tumorigenesis and pituitary adenoma associated excessive hormone secretion. Insights into the pathomechanisms at cellular and molecular level will provide a basis for the development of novel treatment concepts for these disorders.

Clinical profile
In our neuroendocrine outpatient clinic nearly 2000 patients per year are treated for various endocrinological disorders with emphasis on hypophyseal disturbances such as pituitary insufficiency or pituitary tumors. However, patients also present thyroid and metabolic disorders or transsexualism. We are involved in national and international clinical trials for the development of novel treatment concepts of endocrine disturbances. Moreover, in close collaboration with psychiatrists we study the interference between endocrine/metabolic disorders and psychiatric disturbances and follow its alterations during treatment.
