Scientific profile
One of the aims of the research group is to investigate the influence of the blood-brain barrier on the aetiology and therapy of neurological and psychiatric diseases. The group’s interest has been focused on transport proteins carrying their substrates against a concentration gradient from the brain back into the blood, thus influencing the endocrinological regulatory circuit and the pharmacokinetics of drugs acting on the CNS.

Further emphasis is put on both the serum and, in particular, the CSF analysis of patients with psychiatric and neurological diseases, which aims at developing biomarkers indicative of disease, course of disease and therapy response.

In addition, clinical-chemical, neurochemical, molecular-biological, chromatography, mass spectroscopy and other analytical tests are performed as part of the projects conducted at the Max Planck Institute and samples/databases established for serum, CSF, DNA and RNA.

Clinical profile
Assistant Medical Director, Head of the neurological outpatient clinic, Head of the department of clinical neurophysiology (EEG, evoked potentials, EMG, sonography) and Head of the neurochemical laboratory comprising the conduction of CSF analyses, therapeutic drug monitoring, hormone detection and further laboratory parameters required for the diagnosis of neurological and psychiatric diseases.
